About the Author
Michael Crawford is an independent consultant and writer on the Middle East. He served the British government in London and overseas, including in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt and Pakistan, from 1981 to 2009. He previously gained a First in Jurisprudence and a Master of Philosophy in modern Middle Eastern studies. He lives in London.

This relatively short book by a former British diplomat and published as part of a Princeton University series on Islam introduced me to the Islam correlate of the Christian fundamentalists that have distorted modern United States politics. I do not find And al-Wahab a sympathetic character, nor is his harsh reaction to those who did not agree with him attractive, and yet his lasting influence in Saudi Arabia makes this a very useful book, at least to those like me that did not understand this part of the Islam culture.

Excellent book on Wahhabism and Saudi Arabia

This is a superb account of the life and thought of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, whose teachings are often referred to as Wahhabism, the official creed of Saudi Arabia. Crawford has combed the original Arabic sources to produce a readable introduction to the subject. His judicious handling of historical interpretation and controversial issues offers valuable insights for veteran scholars as well. It is sure to become the standard reference.
