About the Author
Hans Kissel (19 February 1897 – 30 November 1975) was a highly decorated Generalmajor in the Wehrmacht during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.

Great book

This book has it all. the pictures and drawing are the best. The reader will enjoy the unit histories form each region that they were used in. After reading I was surprised to read about particular regiments formed to fight in the regular German army. The organization is studied and the forming of units during the chaotic ending of World War II. The units that served on the eastern front give a good account of themselves while some units fighting on the western front did not is covered as to why and the type of equipment these units had.

Hans Kissel's Hitler's Last Levy: The Volkssturm 1944-45 provides a companion to IN A Raging Inferno - Combat Units Of The Hitler Youth, but stands well on its own as a fine account of the German Home Guard, which was formed from men unfit for military service, the young, and the old. The Guard saw extensive combat and Kissel here describes the Volkssturm's training, organization, armament and more. Translations of German documents and specialty eyewitness combat reports pair with nearly two hundred black and white photos and color uniform plates to make for an intense, detailed history.

The Best History About the Volkssturm

Lost of never before seen photos and a very detailed account of the Volkssturm, backed by numerous references to official Nazi records and personal histories of Volkssturm leaders. I bought the Kindle edition and was pleased with it.
