Review
"Natalie Schilling learned the "secrets of sociolinguistic fieldwork" (as she so aptly puts it) in both urban and rural settings. Her hands-on experience gives her book uncommon breadth, and her sensitivity, both scientific and social, gives it unrivalled depth." --J.K. Chambers, University of Toronto

"..a detailed blueprint of sociolinguistic fieldwork, from initial study design, to making contacts, to more long term community involvement ... manages to capture wonderfully the often 'messy' experience of data collection in the real world. The 'secrets' of sociolinguistic fieldwork are indeed unlocked in this book." --Jennifer Smith, University of Glasgow

"Perhaps Natalie Schilling has done our little band of scholars a bad service by letting our secrets out in this comprehensive and clearly-written account of what sociolinguists do - not just the various ways we go about doing it but, more importantly, the social and linguistic questions (and their interaction) that motivate our doing it, these latter points very well-integrated into the how-tos. A much larger audience will now have access to our mysteries, but, of all the linguistic mysteries that should be revealed to a more general public, sociolinguistics is surely at the forefront in the roles it plays in establishing a more democratic society. In short, on all these fronts, this is a very good place to learn how to do and why we do sociolinguistics." --Dennis R. Preston, Regents Professor, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater USA

Takes the fear and mystery out of fieldwork by explaining it every step of the way
By Joey Stanley
This book is fantastic. I'm a grad student in sociolinguistics getting ready for going out to the field for the first time to gather data for my dissertation. This book explains everything that I could need to know, every step of the way. The book is an excellent source of how to do things in the traditional sociolinguistic way, and provides plenty of examples of how this should be done, as well as ways other researchers have branched out.

Here's a chapter-by-chapter summary:

• Introduction: This discussed a lot of the classics in sociolinguistics with lots of citations. I know now what to read next.
• Selecting the population: This was great because it opened by eyes to all sorts of things to consider before even getting to the field. It goes through several studies and looks at how they define a speech community. Each community is different, and you may not know exactly what populations are important until you get there. It talks about how to get a good sample of the population and the unexpected issues you may face. Next is stratifying the sample, which is a problem because the typical variables like age, sex, gender, ethnicity, etc. are a lot more fluid than once believed. It then talks about language change in real time and how it's really difficult to get comparable data over time.
• Data-collection methods: This chapter covers ways to collect data including surveys, sociolinguistic interviews, and ethographic observation, as well as perception, identification, and attitudes. It keeps in mind the authenticity of the data. It recommends that the researcher use several sources of data, because Labov said that we come closest to truth "by convergence of several kinds of data with complementary sources of error."
• Designing research on style—This chapter starts off looking at the "attention to speech" approach and how it's been used. But then it looks at some of the criticism and how in narratives with frequent point of view changing, there can be different dramatized variants going on to imitate different people. It mentions Bell (1984) and Audience Design and how not only do audience changes affect speech but also topic shifts do too. Research has shown that addressee affects are indeed stronger than auditor effects, as Bell predicts. It discusses other studies that have tested Audience Design. One interesting question is trying to figure out what is it about the audience that changes the speaker's speech. Is it their actual speech, or their expected speech, or something else like perhaps what they think the audience's expectations of them are? While before, speakers were seen as merely automatic products of their sociolinguistic variables, nowadays we see speakers as agents who use variation to shape themselves.
• In the field: Finding contacts, finding a place—The most difficult step in a project is entering the community for the first time, but it's greatly facilitated with careful planning. This chapter talks about how to make initial contacts in the community, finding participants once you're there, and the role of the researcher both in the community and in the interview. In the chapter summary at the end, it's pointed out that once you're in the interview, it's hard to make it go wrong: people are always willing to spend an hour to talk about themselves.
• Recording and record-keeping: This chapter reviews what's important to know when thinking about recording. It talks about the technical specifications of recorders and microphones, as well as microphone placement and the different kinds of microphones out there. Cables, batteries, and the little stuff is easy to overlook, but just as important. It talks about finding a setting to do the recording and trying to find the balance between quality sound and comfort/naturalness of the participant and their speech. The chapter then goes int record-keeping and data management and discusses the various ways this is done, what records to keep, how to work with the mass of data you get in, and how to properly store it securely for a long period of time. It emphasizes the confidentiality of the participants.
• Giving back the community: The book ends with a chapter on giving back to the community. It discusses how other sociolinguists have gone above and beyond what the IRB requires and given back the communities they study in substantial ways: advocacy, empowerment, etc.

I checked this book out at the library, but I'm going to buy myself a copy now. There are so many things I can reread and go back to and mark up. I would recommend this book to anyone who is studying sociolinguistics, and especially if they plan on doing fieldwork. It may seem daunting and terrifying to do sociolinguistic fieldwork, but this book has encouraged me to do this work and has broken the process down into realistic steps in a way that makes me really look forward to my own data collection.
