Salute To The Sailor

Sailor Jerry is a legend--the likes of which is almost impossible to find today. He was both an artistic and technical genius and certainly deserving of the title Tattoo Master. He was also a bit of an old coot.
Sailor Jerry is a lot like a dad. Though you don't necessarily agree with all of his views, he's still an inspiration. I'm apprenticing as a tattoo artist and he sets the standard that I strive for every day. Not just as a good tattoo artist. Not even a great one. But the best. I'm proud to have Sailor Jerry's beautiful illustrations tattooed on my skin. A tribute, so to speak, to the master.
This is a great read regardless of your being tattooed or not. It explains a lot about tattoo history, particularly the development of the shading needle, and the importance of military symbolism in Hawaii. And Sailor Jerry's illustrations are just beyond description. Perfect in every detail.
A very endearing book. Makes you want to talk to your dad about the war and get "Twin Screws" tattooed on your butt cheeks. (Or is that just me?)

A Must-Read!

I'm hooked on all things sea, sailor, and pirate related right now. Ever since watching Pirates of the Caribbean recently I have found great CDs to hear sea shanties and even a book called What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor?. With that said, I am happy to have this new book in my collection. It's crazy to see it selling for $75, since I found a used copy at a store for only $30. Apparently, that was a steal. Is it valuable? Most definitely.

Sailor Jerry Collins is the father of the mid-20th century renaissance or tattooing, and his life is worth honoring! Among beautiful illustrations, Collins' career is shared through the eyes of his student D.E. Hardy (of the Ed Hardy brand). His insights are funny and witty of a pretty awesome legend.

worth every penny... a great book

what a fantastic book! not only is it filled with great pictures of his flash, it also has a ton of his sketches, stencils, great photos of his work on skin, and letters that illuminate the life of the man that gave us this wonderful art. it is an in-depth look at the life and times of sailor jerry and his honolulu of the 40's, 50's and 60's. awesome, awesome, awesome! as an aspiring tattooist, i was deeply inspired not only in pursuit of the art as a career, but by looking at the photos of his work in the flesh, it has also given me direction for how i want to cover my own skin. i would highly recommend this book. it is worth every penny.

EB White did a great job with Charlotte's web

What a strange story! I can see how the concept of a little person/mouse gets to ride in a toy car and sail a toy boat seems cute...but then he shows how incredibly rigid his personality is not being able to let go of his expectations for his "date". Not that a real tiny girl would ever exist anyway. Our grandson was upset at how negative Stuart was--and I was too. This is a loosely associated compilations of little stories that don't hang together. Our grandson was also upset that Stuart wasn't ever going home. He just takes off in his car...but he'll run out of money and he has no job or skills...it's very strange. EB White did a great job with Charlotte's web, but I can't recommend this.

A Little Confused

A great book and my children (ages six and three) loved hearing me read it. Nothing like the movies but there are some familiar characters. The Littles, Stuart, Margalo, and Snowbell were all there and the movie's characterizations were faithful to the book. But the story's ending was not nearly so much on the 'happily ever after' stuff. Not bad, mind you, but my impression of the book's theme was that of growing up and going out on one's own. Independence, if you will. The movies were more morality plays with lessons learned in the end but no real character growth. Perfect for sequels I guess.
One part did throw me, however: In the author bio on the back cover it states that White began writing for his niece when she was six but by the time he finished she was grown and reading Hemingway. What, was she seven?

I liked this story. Read it years ago when I was in grade school. Still enjoyed reading it. Seemed shorter than I thought. But I enjoyed reading it.

GLAD I CHANGED MY MIND

I almost didn't buy this book because of the title. Secret Techniques? Seriously? I have to admit, though, that I never heard of the methods that Koros explains in his book, and I often read self-help books. And he explains the techniques pretty clearly, too. His techniques are derived from simple observations and seem to hide in plain sight. I'm surprised that psychologists haven't found them. I recommended this book to a couple of friends, who liked it, too, but I still hate the title. Secret Techniques? Please!

an excellent book!

I had a job interview, and I usually worry before and during interviews. I bought four different books, and Secret Techniques was one of them. While all the books that I bought had something interesting, Secret Techniques was different. Using fun examples, the author shows very specific changes that occur in your breathing and body movements, which if you interfere with, turn off an emotion. I couldn't shut down my pre-interview anxiety using the activating breath technique alone, but I made it disappear almost completely when I used that technique together with the one described in the movements of the torso chapter. This book is like a manual, and if you need to get rid of a feeling that gets in the way, you'll find it useful.

Worth The Quick Read

I didn't know what to expect from the book, but after reading then practicing Koros' methods, I've gotten a far better understanding of my own emotions, and from understanding comes control. Koros explains things in an easy, stepwise manner, then gives you practice techniques to learn to recognize and control your emotions just as they begin to overwhelm-- anxiety is not complicated as you may believe it to be. The book is short enough to be read in an afternoon and valuable enough to easily exceed its cheap asking price. I'd recommend it to anybody.

About the Author

MASATOSHI NAKAYAMA carries on the tradition of his teacher, Gichin Funakoshl, the Father of Modern Karate. Long professor and director of physical education at Takushoku University, his alma mater (1937), he was chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association from 1955 until his death in 1987. A ninth degree black belt and a familiar face at tournaments, he was among the first to send instructors overseas and to encourage the development of karate along scientific lines.

Excellent production, as is the entire "Best Karate" series

This book, and the entire "Best Karate" series, have the typical JKA (former JKA that is), high production values and painstaking attention to detail. With the exception of the first few kata books of this series, novice rank students may find it difficult to understand many of the nuances of the techniques presented, but in fact, the entire series is a virtual warehouse of infomation for the more advanced student, and is perfect as a reference source. The late Mr. Nakayama has always produced publications of high quality, and this series is no exception, even for students not aligned with the JKA or even Shotokan, for that matter.

A timeless Masterpiece

It has been over twenty years since I was first introduced to this series of books and they remain timeless classics for anyone interested in Karate. After so many years, so many moves, so many changes, I had lost track of my Best Karate books. This year my son started training and I was thrilled to discover that Amazon.com has this book available.

The Best Karate Series are the definitive books for learning the art of Shotokan karate. They have been around for many years and still none have surpassed their excellence. They are very helpful for the beginner and the advanced student alike. I have read them all and have found that each book in the series is excellent. Although you can't learn a martial art from a book alone, these books are an excellent supplement to your training and are very helpful in learning the finer points of the art of Shotokan. Each book in this series sets the standard for books on Shotokan training. There are simply none better, at least none better that I have found, and I read a lot of martial arts books. I highly recommend these books for anyone who is interested in improving their karate or who is interested in Shotokan. They are simply the best! Highly recommended. 5 Stars.

About the Author
John T. Cacioppo is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor and Director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at the University of Chicago. He is a past President of several scientific societies, including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Social Neuroscience, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and a past Chair of the Psychology Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among the awards he has received are the Troland Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association, a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, the Scientific Impact Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions from the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and the Campbell Award and the Theoretical Innovation Prize from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Cacioppo is a Member of the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science; the Chair of the Board of Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences at the National Research Council and a Member of the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate; and a former Member of both the Council for the NIH Center for Scientific Review and the Council for the National Institute on Aging.

Laura A. Freberg (Ph.D., UCLA) is Professor of Psychology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she teaches courses in Introductory Psychology, Biological Psychology, and Sensation and Perception. Laura's teaching career began when she taught her first college course at Pasadena City College at the age of 23. To better understand the needs of the online education community, she also teaches a variety of psychology courses for Argosy University Online. Laura has received Faculty Member of the Year recognition from Cal Poly Disabilities Resource Center three times (1991, 1994, and 2009) for her work with students with disabilities. She enjoys using technology and social media in the classroom, and is a Google Glass Explorer. Laura serves as the Content Expert Writer for Psychology for Answers.com and as the Bylaws and Archives Committee Chair for the Society for Social Neuroscience. She is a member of the editorial board for Leadership Quarterly. With John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago, she is the co-author of two editions of DISCOVERING PSYCHOLOGY: THE SCIENCE OF MIND (Cengage Learning).

Affordable, 1 volume intro to counseling psychology

I bought this book because I loaned my original to someone, I forgot whom, and they must covet it too much to return it! This is a wonderful handbook to assign for a 1 semester grad course covering current research and application in counseling psychology. Students gave it mostly rave reviews and I had them provide a written review of each chapter as we covered it in class.
