Very inspirational and uplifting

I'm in love with this book! It's my favorite book of all time. I first laid my eyes on this book in 1980 when it was first published. It is a book on philosophy but it is written simply and flawlessly, very refreshing. This is one book that you can go back to, time and time again to reflect and be inspired. It uplifts you when you feel down and unspirited. It has been written for the lay person to understand faith, death, hope and happiness drawn from different religions and from different philosophies.

An Apologetics Masterpiece

The Book of Ecclesiastes says "God has placed eternity in our hearts." I have read this book several times and have been waiting to do this book a just book review, but the first thing I have to say is that it's mind boggling that so many books other than this one have received such a wide reading - and this book hasn't. I think it's a classic masterpiece by a brilliant philosopher who in the mold of C.S. Lewis and Thomas Aquinas writes one of the best reasonable defenses for life after death that have possibly ever been written.

The book is not an "easy" read, but an incredibly "rewarding" read. I think the depth of Kreeft's knowledge of philosophy coupled with theology and his wide range of reading and creativity makes for writing that feeds the soul and the mind. So much of what we read today is "fast food." Heaven: The Heart's Deepest Longing is a seven-course gourmet meal that leaves you full and satisfied. After contemplating what you have just read it makes you long for Heaven and a deeper and more intimate relationship with Jesus.

The reason I call this an "Apologetics Masterpiece" is because I think Kreeft brilliantly articulates how Heaven is necessary in order for all our desires to be satisfied in the afterlife. He makes a great case for the existence of God and the necessity of our home with Him. There is so much that we long for in this life that will never be satisfied, but will be satisfied in the next. The atheist, agnostic, or even varieties of "ists" and "isms" can't really explain why our hearts long for so much that can't be obtained in this life. Peter Kreeft articulates with tremendous insight and creativity to show that Heaven is what we were made for and why that's the case.

I can't do the book justice. All I can say is what the Holy Spirit said to Augustine so many years ago: "Take up and read, take up and read...this book." If you are philosophical and a deep thinker you will absolutely love this book. If you are not a deep thinker, you may struggle along, but I would encourage you to read the book slowly and thoughtfully. Anyone can benefit from this book, but especially those who read it slowly and thoughtfully. One thing this book always does for me, is increase my joy and my hope in my future home - where I will finally be satisfied with everything I've ever longed for and more.

    Good book that doesn't scare you

    This book is very informative and discusses important things you should know without instilling fear, as some of the other books out there are accused of. It is unbiased and discusses all sides of subject. There are side notes that explain if the authors lean towards one side or another: they explain why so you can understand and leave you with enough information to then make your own decision. I only gave it 4 stars because I purchased the kindle version and there are quick links to other points in the book that don't take you where they should. That is really annoying but it would have been a wonderful feature, had it worked. (Oh, and I also wish someone would add a chapter to their books from the point of view of a short person. I feel physically like I am 2 months ahead of all you tall lanky ladies out there. Ie: "Around month seven you will feel your uterus start to expand over your naval"... Really? Because I am in month five and I'm pretty sure my uterus is up in my throat. Thats all lol.)

    So many better pregnancy guides out there.

    I'll be honest - I got as far as I could, about four chapters in, and I wasn't able to continue. After reading the "Mayo Clinic Guide for a Healthy Pregnancy", I was underwhelmed by this book. I was quite frankly shocked that any kind of a medical authority going by the tagline of "the man who remade motherhood" would essentially state that Asians tend to be lean because they eat with chopsticks. Huh, do they teach that in med school? Of course, no studies or attribution for the claim in the book, which to me is not only intellectually lazy but just racist. I knew I was done when Dr. Sears joked that "childbirth" was his co-author's/wife's favorite exercise (I'm not kidding.) That, plus the uber creepy fetus drawings giving "mama" all kinds of sage advice, and the cutesie langauge - stress management by dividing problems into "biggies" and "smallies" - was just a bit much. I'm giving birth to child; I am not a child. This just wasn't the book for me.

    I find the Sears writing style to be very readable and have enjoyed every book written by Dr or Martha I've read. This is my second pregnancy and I wish I had this book the first time around! Lots of great info for anyone and goes beyond just nutrition and food. Recommended this book to my sister who's on her first pregnancy and she loves it too.

    Keep in mind the mistakes.........

    Everyone here is giving five stars, but I recently bought this 1992 (revised) edition off amazon, replacing the previous edition that I had 20 years ago which was nicked by one of my friends.

    If you really know music, you will see that there are now lots of editorial errors. for example, on the MODULATION page, it says:

    "You could change straight from C to G, since the vertical columns show that G is both the dominant (V) in the key of C and the root (I) in the key of C and the sub-dominant (IV) in the key of G.."

    I assure you that:

    G is the dominant (V) in the key of C
    but

    G is not the root (I) in the key of C
    and furthermore

    G is not the sub-dominant (IV) in the key of G..

    the author meant:

    "You could change straight from C to G, since the vertical columns show that G is both the dominant (V) in the key of C and the root in the key of G.. and C is the sub-dominant in the key of G"

    These errors are perhaps to be expected in our age of computer grammar check. If you know your chord theory you can sort that out with a red pen after scratching your head for a while, but if you don't, you are going to be lost.

    I also find mislabeled chord diagrams like the seventh augmented fifth fingering on page 127. It says root note on the 5th string but the root is on the second (A) string, and the intervals are labeled upside down. from top 3rd,b7th,#5th,1st? No: 1st,#5th, 3rd, b7th.

    What can I say? it is disappointing and again a beginner is going to be stuck here. Nevertheless it is and has always been a great book.

    If you are a beginner and purchase it, just keep in mind that there are errors, but if you are buying this to replace your old copy, maybe better wait till a new edition comes out, and I hope the publisher doesn't make the cover any thinner.

    Everything You Need - and Should - Know

    I started lessons two years ago as a beginner with an acoustic guitar. I had never previously had any exposure to musical instruments. I get 30 minutes a week with my teacher (who is fabulous) but he throws a lot of information at me and I don't always immediately grasp what he is saying or demonstrating. This book has been a godsend in that it very comprehensive and explains chords, scales, and music theory concepts in an easy to understand manner. The illustrations are clear and extremely helpful. I find that I use the manual constantly to reinforce or clarify my learning and it has - along with a lot of practice! - helped me steadily progress as an aspiring musician. If you are already an accomplished player, you may find this to be redundant of what you know, but for me it has been extremely helpful.

    If you play guitar for fun or are a serious student you simply have to get a copy of this book. This handbook sets the standard for all other guitar books and instruction. Encyclopedic in the information it contains. Denyer's handbook was recommended to me by a professional guitar player, a 60+ year guitar player and two guitar instructors.
