About the Author
A superb writer, photographer, and naturalist, Stephen James O'Meara is author of several highly acclaimed books, including others in the celebrated Deep-Sky Companions series. O'Meara earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University and is well known among the astronomical community for his engaging and informative writing style and his remarkable skills as a visual observer. O'Meara spent much of his early career on the editorial staff of Sky and Telescope before joining Astronomy magazine as its Secret Sky columnist and a contributing editor. Among his many achievements, he was the first to sight Halley's Comet on its 1985 return and the first person to determine the rotation period of the distant planet Uranus. One of his most distinguished feats was the visual detection of the mysterious spokes in Saturn's B-ring before spacecraft imaged them. O'Meara has been honored with several awards, including the prestigious Lone Star Gazer Award for 'advancing astronomy through observation, writing, and promotion, and for sharing his love of the sky', and the Caroline Herschel Award for his planetary discoveries. The International Astronomical Union renamed asteroid 3637 O'Meara in his honor. O'Meara is also a contract photographer/videographer for National Geographic Creative.

Evangelical history of education: philosophical, editorial.

This book is a very complete history of public education in America. It includes biographical sketches of every influential thinker including Europeans who have influenced U.S public education. The author is a theologian as well as a scholar in the field of education. He places education in the United States in the greater context of ancient and medieval educational theory and practice. His insightful philosophical observations in his introductory materials and his epilogical comments are worth the price of the book. Any one taking the standard undergraduate course in "history of education" would greatly profit by using this book as parallel reading. Any one seeking to know why the American public school system, once dominated by Protestant theology and ethics, has become theologically "neutral" and dominated by a humanist theology and ethic should consider Rushdoony's point of view.

A presuppositional critique of the history of philosophy of education in America

This is a thick book: 400 pages, every one densely packed with names and philosophies of education covering the last 200 years in American education. This book appears on several reading lists (for example in Doug Wilson's Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning), as a devastating critique of the philosophy of the American education system.

This book is "an historical and analytical study of the philosophies of education in state education in the United States." (x) He starts out with a couple of chapters of historical introduction, stretching all the way back to Rome and then later Scholasticism, and explains how "the university gradually developed its concept of academic freedom, that is, an independent authority for reason and scholarship which made it responsible to none other, and its concept of the redemptive, authoritative and power-endowing nature of knowledge, of reason, of university and school." (17)

He then jumps into the American history of the philosophy of education, and doesn't come up for air until the end of the book. 21 of the 28 chapters are each devoted to a particular figure in this history, starting with Horace Mann, and including men like William Harris, Francis Parker, Wiliam James, G. Stanley Hall, and John Dewey.

Each chapter is heavy on original source quotes, so you can read for yourself the sort of language and philosophy that has shaped education in America. This is important, because if you couldn't see it with your own eyes, you would be tempted to write Rushdoony off as a crackpot conspiracy theorist. His title "The Messianic Character," put me on guard initially, that maybe he is taking this a little too far, but page after page, quote after quote, from figure after figure and eventually you cry out "Okay! I get it! your point is incontrovertible."

This history of American education has been shaped by men and women who believed in the innate goodness of man, and his ability to reach utopia through education. They themselves use religious, messianic, salvation language when describing the process of education, specifically apart from the God of the Bible. When you see how these men were the professors of teacher's colleges, and held positions in federal and state Education departments, you see how we have reached our present condition.

I appreciate the hardcore presuppositionalist reconstructionists for this: they boldly take on ungodly philosophies from the foundation up, and spare nothing in exposing them for what they really are. The Bahnsen/Stein debate is another classic example of this. While I don't agree with the solution that they posit (theonomy, reconstructionism), their critiques are devastating and extremely helpful, and pave the way for a more truly Biblical solution. I want them on my demolition team, even if I don't ask them to help me rebuild :-)

One final note, Rushdoony is hard to read. His sentences are often tangled syntactical messes, and his paragraphs often extend for 3-4 pages in length. Here's an example that I noted for it's sheer convolutedness:

"In Idealism, God, however exalted in rhetoric, nevertheless, especially since Hegel, labors mightily merely to bring forth the new universal, man. In Horne, this strange "God" was still on the stage; in Dewey, having brought forth the child of destiny, man, this "God," like a salmon whose life ends with spawning, faded quietly out of the picture."

Dozens of names, dates, places, and quotes, combined with the difficult style of Rushdoony's writing, makes this a laborious read. Nevertheless, if you want to understand the history of the philosophy of American education, this is the book to tackle, if you must!

Good overview

This book, originally published more than 50 years ago (1963), is a compendium of information on the history of educational philosophy in America. It vastly expands on some of the ideas Rushdoony presented in his earlier work, "Intellectual Schizophrenia" (1961). Whether you agree with all of Rushdoony's conclusions concerning the nature of American education in general or what he says about specific figures, or, in particular, whether you agree with his position as a Christian Reconstructionist, Rushdoony makes many perceptive points regarding the philosophy of American educators and philosophers such as Horace Mann, William James, John Dewey, J.B. Watson, Edward Lee Thorndike, George Counts, and others. Although some of his analyses may be superficial (but going into greater depth would have meant either writing an unwieldy book or ignoring many of the currents that have shaped educational philosophy in America), they still function both as an overview and as a decent critique of the various positions examined.

Explosive fun

What kind of trouble can Hank Zipzer get into when his school is hosting a multi-cultural day? All kinds. In this segment of the adventures of Hank, his friends and family the Zipzers, are selected to host a visiting international student. Yoshi Morimoto and his Father are from PS87's sister school in Tokyo and are visiting schools in America. The visit coincides with PS87's multicultural day.

The problems begin when the gang, Hank, Frankie, Ashley and Yoshi try to make enchiladas and the task of reading the recipe falls on Hank. With his dyslexia he struggles with the fractions, and the enchiladas end up with a lot of zing. Once again Hank learns that telling the truth is the best way to go. A good story in a great series.

This series created by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver is a must read for every kid in 3 grade and up. I read the first Hank Zipzer book a few years back and it reminded me of one of my own boys. I told my son's 4th grade teacher she had to read the book, that it was one of the best books for kids I had read in a long time. Turns out four years later she is still reading the books to her students. Kids easily realate to the charaters and issues incountered in each of the 12 books. Short and easy to read, these books become an instant favorite.

Excellent source of vital android framework knowledge

This is the best book to learn about the android framework's async features. There are other broader books on android that will give a chapter or two to the various pieces of the framework that are provided to help you run tasks asynchronously but they always seem to leave you wanting and wandering Google for a little more information. The author gives a thorough introduction to each of the tools provided by android to help its developers run tasks in parallel.

I would recommend reading the entire book but it is organized nicely and each component gets its own chapter. If you are simply dealing with asynctasks and life cycle issues related to asynctasks you can open this book to that chapter and be happily on your way.

Overall because of the importance that android places on not blocking an application's main thread means that every android developer should read this book to get the best performance and stability from their apps.

Not Bad, But Very Thin

Give this book a little bit of credit for doing a decent job of covering the waterfront which is kind of vast. You can figure most of the same things out reading the documentation, but this is a good single source, for example, to figure out if you want to use Handlers or AsyncTasks, etc. Frankly, this is one of the best things books can provide when their topic is as wide ranging as an operating system, and the Android docs do not do this very well. The section on Services is really pretty good: there is discussion of IntentService vs. extending Service itself, and the rationale for doing services (which is actually quite broad).

The negatives in this book is that the material is pretty thin. For instance, there is no in depth discussion of things like the looper. There is no discussion at all about testing. It all kind of has the feel of just 'if you're looking for x, go to door y.' Also, there are a few sections of the book that are completely absurd like the one where the author uses a file download as an example of something that ought be implemented as a service, then in the chapter summary he calls it the best example of a service. On earth? Huh??

Just barely made 4 and that's because of the success in providing comparative summaries that the documentation lacks.

About the Author

Robert Reid, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He has done extensive work nationally and internationally on children with ADHD and on cognitive strategy instruction. He has also conducted research with youth in residential settings and in out-of-home care. Dr. Reid has published over 100 articles and book chapters as well as the coauthored ADHD Rating Scale–IV, which is now used in seven countries, and presents at national and international conferences. He is a recipient of the Special Education Student Research Award from the American Educational Research Association and the Jeannie P. Baliles Child Mental Health Research Award from the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. Dr. Reid currently serves on the editorial boards of five journals and actively reviews for a number of others. Joseph Johnson, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. Prior to earning his doctorate in special education, he taught in public secondary schools for over 13 years, including 6 years as a special education teacher in both resource and cotaught classrooms. His interests include cognitive strategy instruction and academic interventions for adolescents with ADHD.

Enjoyable & Informative for Every Reader

I read this book from cover to cover as part of a Special Ed course on the educational implications of ADHD. The thing that surprised me most about this textbook is that it was actually very enjoyable to read. Reading this book is similar to attending a lecture that is presented in such a way that one can easily remember even the most complex concepts that were covered, even without having had to take extensive notes. I recommend this book to general educators, special educators, families of children with ADHD, and people with ADHD. Everyone will benefit from the information included, especially the multitude of practical advice for effective teaching.
