I got the wrong book. I picked the Massachusetts police scanner book but the one I got was from differnt state. I think it Human error on the the sellor part. when I confirmed every thing on my account it said you order Massachusetts book. I think over all it was mix up.

About the Author

John Allan Wyeth was born in Alabama, and served as a private in the Confederate cavalry until his capture two weeks after Chickamauga. After the war he became a surgeon. He died in 1922.

The Civil War you're looking for...

I've read the dry memoirs of a few Civil war heroes. Grant, Sherman, Sheridan. They're fine. But if you want the real guts'n'drive factor of this war, this doctor's story of Forrest is what you're after. As another reviewer has mentioned, when you get into other major characters you actually find less good action, more weakness, time-wasting. Forrest has his flaws, but more along the lines of all of ours. Hold a grudge if you like, but give the story its due. This has it all, in spades.
The doc is a passionate storyteller but doesn't prejudice the tale. He's written to a fine line.
The other major biographer, Steel, is known as the fairest (and the most recent and "professional"), but with him we get excessive DRYNESS. Who needs that. Moreover, Steel bends over backwards to discredit the hero Forrest, giving more than equal time to every potshot against him. This is called fairness. The shots never hit their mark even with Steel, yet he gives them their due and their due dilutes, taints and distracts the story. ---Even more so than Forrest's own flaws do! (Touche'.)
Wyeth is a clean historian yet lets the story's vigor come through just right. The adventures of Forrest will keep you riveted from start to finish. There's no other way to put it.
Forrest's covering of Hood's (?) final retreat was, in that day, declared to be the inevitable future subject of EPIC poems. We haven't seen any such thing, sadly. But that's the scale of this story. It would still be worth the effort, I think. A movie anyone?
Of course, every angle is worth savoring---including the old partisan Lytle's "Critter Company" bio.

Plain facts yield thrilling tale

This is one of the first Civil War books I've read. It's hard to imagine I'll ever find a more thrilling one! Forrest is a hero beyond compare. It's amazing how Wyeth's dry, barebones delivery so clearly lets one read the amazing human spirit between the lines. These bare facts alone tell a tale more thrilling than any I've come across to date. Of course, sometimes our good doctor tips his hand with feeling and fervor about honor and good work, but he never seems biased, nor overloading our hero with praise. He relies heavily on clippings of official reports from both sides. I would say the Northern leadership appreciated him more than the Southern leaders. The "unlettered soldier" sure seems to have been screwed over by the old boy's network many times in response to his victories and saves. There's frustration, but also a sufficiency of comeuppance and a steady faith in virtue as its own reward. Forrest's occasion for nearly throttling Bragg was unforgettable: "If you ever again try to interfere with me or cross my path it will be at the peril of your life." Forrest was big, strong, scary and his men loved him. He raised multiple armies from nothing and equiped them by way of victory, only to have them taken away, re-officered and such. He was quick to temper and just as quick to apologize if need be. God's own democrat, as they say. A rare general who fought at the front every time. Killed 30 himself. An early innovator in guerilla war. Used flying batteries at the front. Used rumor and deception. He did much of his own reconnaisance behind the lines. When charged, he never took a charge but charged back, saying he believed a charging man was worth 3 standing. His famous saying "get there the firstest with the mostest" seems to be typed differently here. Likely his grammar cleaned up? It never says he was illiterate, but was he close to this? Anyway, I'd never heard of him until now. Perhaps being a Northerner had something to do with it? My loss, until now. Despite being shafted often, it seems like he was able to always keep his 'escort' of about 80 plus a few brigades thru most of the story as he builds and loses armies to his rivals. I sense more great drama involving those who stayed loyal to him throughout. If ever split from him awhile they seem to come back to him like a magnet. I'm hoping to find that side covered by Lytle's 'Critter Company.'

"As a writer I'm all over the place," says horror maverick Jack Ketchum (the pseudonym of Dallas Mayr) with typical understatement in his introduction to Peaceable Kingdom, a collection of 32 shorter fictional works from the past decade. You never know what you'll get when you pick up a Ketchum story (the contents range from the "ice-cold" to the "almost cuddly" and include a western, a vampire tale and the Stoker-winning "Gone" and "The Box"), but you can be sure you'll always be surprised-and scared.

About the Author

Jack Ketchum is the pseudonym for a former actor, singer, teacher, literary agent, lumber salesman, and soda jerk––a former flower child and baby boomer who figures that in 1956 Elvis, dinosaurs and horror probably saved his life. His first novel, Off Season, prompted the Village Voice to publicly scold its publisher in print for publishing violent pornography. He personally disagrees but is perfectly happy to let you decide for yourself. His short story The Box won a 1994 Bram Stoker Award from the HWA, his story Gone won again in 2000––and in 2003 he won Stokers for best collection for Peaceable Kingdom and best long fiction for Closing Time. He has written eleven novels, three of which have recently been made into feature films––The Lost, The Girl Next Door, and Red. His stories are collected in The Exit At Toledo Blade Boulevard, Broken on the Wheel of Sex, Peaceable Kingdom, Sleep Disorder (with Edward Lee) and Closing Time and Other Stories. His novella The Crossings was cited by Stephen King in his speech at the 2003 National Book Awards. King has also called him “the scariest man in America” in Entertainment Weekly. He believes King is wrong on this and that the scariest man in America lives across the Potomac.

How Short Stories Are Supposed To Be Written

When one gets to know an author through his or her fiction, one comes to expect a certain sameness or familiarity in their work, a comfortable foundation on which they will build a new, but not entirely unfamiliar story. With Ketchum, one must only expect a well written story, because that is the only similarity you are going to get. He has written so broadly and so well over the years, and this collection is the highlight of a brilliant, if somewhat underappreciated, career. It collects most of his short fiction, contains a few stories exclusive to this edition, and reprints all but two stories from his earlier and long out of print collection The Exit At Toledo Blade Boulevard. If you get the Subterranean Press limited edition, you will find some artwork to two of the stories, if you get the Leisure edition, you will find a new afterword. I recommend them both. Some of these stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry, some will leave you stunned. The range of this author far outshines any other, and you can't go wrong with this book.

This book is worth the price alone for the story titled MAIL ORDER, which is one of the best short horror tales I've read in years (think a more demented version of the film 8MM). Kethcum shines with this collection, and the few non-horror tales (plus a western) all keep the readers' interest. Horror fans will eat this up. The thirty-two tales fly by.

Sometimes the lamb eats the lion

Truly a phenomenal anthology, I buzzed through Ketchum's collection like a goose through a field of June-bugs, smacking my lips at every tasty morsel.

There are thirty-two stories here in this collection, way to many to give even the briefest of synopsis for each, but trust me when I say that Ketchum runs a gamut here from realism to surrealism straight through the ethereal and on into the pits of hell itself. Yummy.

A Mother sees her ten year old son for the monster he is, a mysterious empty box that leaves death in its wake, parrots and body-painting in a haunted bar, the unbreakable melding of minds with twins, a dying author's last wish, new methods of gentlemen's justice, just to skim a few teasers.

Of special mention are the tales "Meagan's Law", a horrifying look at a real life monster that twists your views around; "The Great San Diego Sleazy Bimbo Massacre", a brutal and hilarious tale of two barflys and an unwanted husband; "The Rose", in which a tattoo artist frees a slave; and "Lines: Or Like Franco, Is Elvis Still Dead", a realistically scary tale of Fatal Attraction.

Ketchum has proven in this collection that he not only writes well, but can cross whatever genre he chooses successfully. Wild, weird, wonderful, horrific, and even inspiring, this is a must-have for you anthology collection.

Gift for fathers

This is a gift for my dad and father-in-law. My parents used to get this every year and they enjoyed answering the questions at breakfast. Each week has a category and as the week moves on, the questions get more difficult. At the end of the week, you can make a wager just like in Final Jeopardy. Fun to do as a family or alone.

My father-in-law is hard to shop for. I hope he'll like it. He can't hate it anymore than other presents I've gotten him.

Great, Fun Calendar! I buy one every year

I buy the Jeopardy! calendar for my father every Christmas. It has been our tradition for over a decade.

My dad loves this calendar. He keeps a running total of his winnings. He won over $74,000,000 dollars last year! If only that were real...

But in all seriousness, he loves the challenge of this calendar. He does not remember any questions being repeated.
