I run an appraisal business and am constantly having to provide estimates for different types of repairs. Once you get used to the format you can provide an estimate that is adjusted to your area and up to date. The CD allows to print or save your estimates so that you may incorporate them into various reports. I would like to see a section similar to RS Means or Swift as for overall construction in the Cost Method is not necessary to give such a detailed cost, a general cost per house category/class and location would be easier.

He draws a weekly comic strip called “Roasted” for The Observer magazine.

This is an adult British cartoon book, meaning some of the humor is going to be quite off color. Of course you may have guessed that with the title. I gave it to my husband for father's day, and we both got some good chuckles out of it. As another reviewer said, it is very short.

This caption runs underneath a picture of an elderly woman in a rocking chair reading, while a boy looks at her trepidatiously.

If you find this sort of thing amusing, I suspect that like me, you'll very much enjoy this book. These comics are sort of like a British youngsters version of Dan Piraro's excellent "Bizarro." By making things deliberately topsy-turvy, Andy Riley gets us to think about the world in a different way.

And that's a good thing.

Some of Andy Riley's other works (The Bunny Suicides) were a bit darker and I was expecting something along those lines. This book is not meant for adults and should have a G rating. It would be appropriate to read to children who might enjoy the content and pictures. The book however just isn't that funny. A few pages elicited a chuckle, most came off flat, and a few were just "a reach" in my opinion.

As a young mathematician, I learned how to make and break simple codes from Sinkov's beguiling introduction to cryptanalysis. In the intervening forty years there has been a revolution in cryptography, and it is fitting that for a modern edition of Sinkov's classic, Todd Feil has indicated the nature of this revolution by adding a lucid introduction to RSA public-key encryption and the number theory which underlies it. If you know a young code breaker who might become a young mathematician, buy her or him this book! Or buy it for yourself and try decoding those messages.

Sinkov's Elementary Cryptanalysis is an eminently readable classic that introduces the reader to both the techniques and the spirit of cryptanalysis -- the art and science of reading secret messages. Todd Feil has done a fine job of modernizing the language of the original. His chapters on RSA encryption and one-time pads give added value to the original, especially the very nice treatment of RSA that assumes almost no prior knowledge of number theory.

A Truly Remarkable Book ...

This is absolutely a classic of basic cryptanalysis. Like Gaines' book (originally called "Elementary Cryptanalysis" but also known by its Dover Book title "Cryptanalysis: A Study of Ciphers and Their Solution"), it covers only "classic" ciphers, those which can be used with pencil and paper for example, and it covers only a subset of those. Still, for beginners in the black art, it is indispensable for learning the techniques for breaking these ciphers. It has an advantage over Gaines text in that if the reader is willing to indulge in some mathematics, it provides a systematic, straightforward method of breaking the ciphers it covers. Those mathematics include basic linear algebra (which virtually everyone gets these days by the time of high school graduation), probability (which I believe very FEW get by high school graduation) and some elementary number theory (which I believe virtually no one gets in high school and most don't get in college). But neither the probability nor the number theory is too difficult for the average student and good basic texts are available for those that want to make the effort but lack the mathematical background. If you're truly interested in cryptanalysis as a hobby, GET THIS BOOK and make an effort to understand the methods it teaches and you will be rewarded with a profound understanding of basic cryptanalytic technique. Note: I own both the paperback version ("Mathematical Association of America Textbooks") and the 2nd Edition hardcover (Anneli Lax New Mathematical Library). The newer text includes 2 additional chapters (on RSA and One Time Pads) but leaves out some computer programs from older text that were written by Paul Irwin in BASIC for analyzing text. That's too bad because even though BASIC is somewhat dated, the algorithms are still valid and could easily be translated over to Perl, Java, C or any other modern language. In fact, they could be probably be copied with a little massaging into a Linux/Unix BASH shell script. Nonetheless, I highly recommend either version.

A stake through the heart of both Judaism and Christianity

Sherlock shows how Judaism and Christianity turned the Egyptian, Babylonian, and Persian myths and practices into a theology using plagiarism and deliberate falsehoods and then subverting the mythology by claiming it was a divine revelation. He chronicles how Christianity started by indoctrinating the young and the ignorant and using Martyrs, Persecutions, and apologists to propagate their virus until they could finally infect an emperor.

This began what Sherlock calls “The Brutal Theocracy of the Christian Dark Ages”:

“With all these components in place, Christianity eventually took control of the Roman Empire and they became one of the darkest and most destructive forces this earth had possibly ever witnessed. From the torture and slaughter of men, women and children, to the suppression of knowledge both ancient and contemporary, the Christians earned a reputation as being the main characters and proponents of the European Dark Ages.”

In the final part of the book, Sherlock discloses the true origins of the Judeo-Christian myths in the older testaments. He shows that this unoriginal collection of myths was derived from earlier mythologies that were available to the creator(s) of the scriptures. When one sees the correspondence between the ancient myths and belief systems and the Judeo-Christian scriptures, there can be no doubt that his claims are true!

Another Homerun

Michael Sherlock has hit another homerun. The second book in his I Am Christ series entitled The Resurrection is well written and thoroughly researched. It discredits the foundations of the Christian religion.
Christians assume their faith spread to become the world’s largest religion because it was true. Sherlock shows otherwise. Sherlock’s research indicates the real reasons for the spread of Christianity were the invention of a great product (eternal life) and the use of force.
In a similar way, Christians assume their gospels are history books. Sherlock makes a convincing case that in fact the gospel stories were taken from ancient pagan myths.
Most depressing for me was his discussion of Christian ethics. Jesus teaches “by their fruits, you will know them,” that we will recognize Christians by their actions. Sadly, more people have died in the name of Jesus than any other person in history. From Sherlock’s careful research, this is merely the tip of the iceberg.
This is a disturbing book for the two million Christians living today. Based on the fundamental problems Sherlock discloses, there is no way the Christian religion will survive as we have known it. My solution is to reinvent it. Sherlock’s solution is to reject it. From his perspective, belief systems like Christianity only close people’s minds and prevent them from growing up into authentic individuals. The two books he has written on this central theme cannot be dismissed lightly.

Grade 4-6-Superficial looks at Truman, Nixon, and Carter. Using the same format throughout, the books open with material about each subject's early life and then discuss his political career and rise to the presidency. They briefly cover the main events of each man's administration and post-White House years, before concluding with a short analysis of how the individual and his years in office are viewed by the public and historians. Each book also includes several one-page sidebars about important people and events, as well as comments and quotes in the margins. The authors are objective, mentioning each man's strengths and weaknesses, including coverage of Watergate and Nixon's resignation. The books are attractive, with numerous black-and-white and full-color photos. However, that attractiveness is overshadowed by the extreme brevity. Each volume has only 37 pages of large-print narrative, most with photos, and the balance of the pages is used for a time line, glossary, listing of all presidents, and bibliography. As a result, these titles offer little more information and analysis than that found in an average encyclopedia entry. Most libraries would be better served by titles from the "Encyclopedia of Presidents" series (Children's), which offers a much more comprehensive look at each leader, his political career and presidential administration, and his legacy.

Gr. 3-5. These two books in the new Spirit of America: Our Presidents series focus on men who ascended to the presidency without an electoral mandate. Francis' book is the more smoothly written, but both, like many series biographies, offer report writers quick facts in roughly chronological order. Neither author spends much time on controversial issues that marked the men's terms in office; for example, Ford's pardoning Nixon and Truman's decision to use atomic weapons are dispensed with so quickly kids might even miss the events' historical impact. The photos, mostly black and white, and the sidebar fast facts work fairly well; boldface terms are a bit too intrusive. The Web sites listed will be helpful, though the books' bibliographies seem overly dependent on other books in the series. It's helpful to have each president covered in a separate volume, but to ensure kids get a real sense of the individuals and the history, have other books on hand, too.
