Neither Complete Nor Accurate, Cut and Paste not even done c

I have spent the last year and ½ working with .NET particularly in the area of Managed C++, C++ and COM Interop, and bought this book to see if there was anything they add to add. This book is touted as a "complete reference." So it is with great shock that in 1073 pages, they fail to even mention Managed Extensions for C++, which arguably is the single most important part of Visual C++.NET. Indeed, the index does not even contain the word "managed!" A person picking up this book may be expected to see a discussion of the profound changes that .NET brings to the Windows programmer. Not even mentioned. Strangely enough, we get a chapter, Chapter 24: C# A Windows Application" that has a chapter on C# without even mentioning .NET!
There is no overview chapter on .NET, the CLR and the CTS, and how they enable cross-language inter-operation. There is no chapter on the new keywords that Managed Extensions introduces like __gc, __valuetype, __pin and so forth. There is no chapter(s) on using .NET's BCL from C++, there is no chapter on how to migrate code to the managed environment, no chapter on mixing managed and unmanaged code, and no COM Interop chapter to name a few.
That's not even the worst part. I got up to page 13 and had to stop because of the sheer number of technical errors. On page 6, we have this interesting tidbit "For these developers, SQL debugging and MTS are integrated into the development environment making development of distributed-transaction-oriented applications faster and easier (SQL Server and MTS come with the Enterprise Edition of Visual C++)." Whoops! Forgot to cut this part out from the last edition and change it! This is a description of Visual C++ Enterprise 6.0! MTS has long since been replaced by COM+ and in some regards .NET. Neither SQL Server nor MTS comes with the Enterprise Edition. It just gets worse from there.
There's no excuse for books like this (and these two authors have been particularly bad at this in other .NET books like this). This kind of cut and pasting from previous editions and missing the boat on most of the meat of this new release does readers a real dis-service.

Pretty good but did we forget something?

Let me start with the negative first - The cover says "Create Web Services" but I didn't see that material in the book when I looked at it in the book store. What happened guys - did the book get a little too thick? I think they must have decided to cut this material before the book got too heavy to carry around. Guys - you need to take that info off the front cover!
Okay, with that said and done, the authors have stayed true to earlier editions. I'm glad to see they took out all of their old C code programs. The book is exclusively C++ except for a couple of chapters that introduce C# (we'll forgive them).
For people just getting started with C++ like high school and college students - you couldn't buy a better book. The core material on C++ is top notch. When I say core material I'm talking about Chapters 1 to 19. Now if you are a little advanced and want to get into Windows programming, read on. Chapters 20 to 23 do a great jon of bringing the material from the beginning chapters into the Windows programs.
The remainder of the books deals with topics that are beyond my interest. However, they are topics that many will find interesting. It just seems to me that if you want that kind of high powered high level information you should be buying a book devoted just to those high level topics.
Anyway, I like the book and even though I already own the earlier version, I bought this version JUST for the chapters on the Standard Template Libraries (STL).

A real complete reference

My father gave me a book by Murray and Pappas about 10 years ago. It was on assembly language programming. He said it saved his job at General Electric. I used it in college and found it to be very helpful.
I guess these are the same guys. Anyway, my company wants to convert some old program code to C++. I had a course in C, but didn't know that much about C++ classes and objects. Well, this book will get you up and running pretty fast. They do a really good job on classes, objects and all of the other object oriented stuff. The best part is how they integrate it with Windows code. I was interested to MFC but most of the books I read assume you know C++ when you want to do MFC. Not this book! They picked me up by my bootstrapes and got me into MFC quickly.
Some of the topics, like COM+, are a little advanced for me at this time, but I guess that is what a complete reference is all about. Thanks guys! (and if my father were still alive I think he would thank you too).

Great for intermediate digital manga artists

This book focuses on the steps taken to create a complete digital manga-style art piece. It isn't by any means a drawing guide for beginners. If you're currently into drawing manga art and coloring digitally, or you are curious of the process one goes through to create digital manga art, this book is fantastic. Each illustration is shown with conceptual sketches, line art as well as varying stages of the coloring process (blocking in solid colors, adding shading and highlights, etc.) Don't expect this book to teach you anatomy or in depth brush techniques. It's primarily a showcase of the art process done from start to finish. With a slightly more in depth explanation of how each work is done, I would have given this book 5 stars. It earns a solid 4. I will also note that a lot of anime drawing guidebooks in English actually feature comparatively poor art, but the artists in this book definitely have the talent to be producing quality manga in Japan.

Wonderful book, dont fall for the bad ratings you see here

Despite the low rating I saw on this book I then realized that only 2 people had bought it anyways, so I went ahead and got this book, along with the Shonen Manga Action Packed book.

Im gonna start off by saying these books are in no way made for beginner manga artists. They don't teach you the basics, like how to draw heads, eyes, hair, etc. The way the book starts off, its already implying you already know the basics and you have been drawing long enough to know how to sketch and create characters.

Each drawing featured shows briefly how the sketch was done, before adding hair, clothes, background, inking, etc. Then it shows the coloring process, then the finished product. This process is shown for every single drawing or painting in the book. Each artist has their own style of drawing and coloring too, so it's a mix of traditional and digital artwork.

The book is really heavy too, which is good in my personal opinion, it means there's a lot of content contained in there. Meaning more to learn, more pictures to look at.. Im a very happy customer :D
So, since its heavy its also a really thick book too, but the cover is glossy and not hard at all. So it might kind of hover over pages when you close the book, (like it wont close all the way) after heavy use.. like holding the book open for a long time while youre reading the steps and looking at artwork. Which is what I expect, since I like to take in all the details, heh.. Theres also a lot of different poses, themes, character designs and different styles of coloring and drawing, so theres alot to take in here. Theres at least 350 pages in this book. Im not exaggerating.

Overall Im very pleased. When the package came in, the book was wrapped tightly in plastic covering, which was also wrapped in loose plastic covering. There was no damage done to the book at all.

It is certainly not a coffee table book, as I read in the other review. If you actually read the steps and understand how the process is done, you can learn from it and probably adopt some ideas for yourself from this book.

About the Author

Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife, Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

 

David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and the University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member of the Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A cofounder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

 

Scott Surgent received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from the University of California—Riverside, and has taught mathematics at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, since 1994. He is an avid sports fan and has authored books on hockey, baseball, and hiking. Scott enjoys hiking and climbing the mountains of the western United States. He was active in search and rescue, including six years as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association (Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office) from 1998 until 2004. Scott and his wife, Beth, live in Scottsdale, Arizona.

I'm pretty sure if you are reading this, purchasing this book isn't really optional for you. That said, the book is decent but a little hard too understand. Some of the examples meant to teach you calculus are ridiculously difficult and sometimes my teacher has a tough time explaining why they did what they did to come up with their answer. Luckily for you, if you have to get this book, they sell a solutions manual for which I give a 5 star review. If you get this, get the solutions manual for sure. You'll find it under "Student Solutions Manual for Calculus and Its Applications".

A Calculus Textbook!

Are you in college for anything other than an art degree, or just really love math? Do you have a ton of money to spend on a textbook when you can get the same information from the free, downloadable powerpoints with the MyMathLab subscription that is inevitably required when you take a college level math class? Then boy is this book for you!

It teaches... wait for it... basic Calculus! Ever wonder what derivatives are for? Does the question of how to accurately find the slope of any point of a non-linear function just burn in your very soul? Then look no further!

Excellent service

This book is excellent. It is easily understood and well written. Not only is this a Calculus book, but it has an excellent Algebra review section. The most impressive part of this order was the shipping. I am a Soldier station in Germany. Some vendors' use this as an excuse to charge more for shipping a package. Not only higher charges but the shipping priorty is slower. Amazon does not do this. The shipping was the best I have ever had. I had the book in my hands threes adys from the time it was ordered.

About the Author
Toshio Mori (1910–1980) was born in Oakland, California. During World War II, he was interned, with his family, at the Topaz Relocation Center in Utah, where he served as camp historian. Xiaojing Zhou is professor of English at the University of the Pacific and author of Cities of Others: Reimagining Urban Spaces in Asian American Literature.

A much-underrated statement of Japanese-American identity.

Even though Sau-ling Cynthia Wong notes that "no
other Asian-American writer since has been able to
match Mori's community portraits for mellowness," his
portraits of Japanese-American life just before World War
II show the strain of a double identity at that time. (Even
the title itself serves to illustrate the cultural binary.)

Mori's prose is sparse, yet it is not cold. In all of the characters,
from Sessue Matoi, the philosopher who "must be drunk and
sober at the same time," to "the woman who makes swell
donuts," there is a warmth and humanity throughout every story,
even while the hints of the coming war begin to appear

Should not be missed!

This book was suppose to come out in print in 1941, but due to the attack on Pearl Harbor and anti-Japanese propaganda, it postponed its release until 1949. Toshio Mori is a master of storytelling. These collections of short stories should be with such classics as Hemingway and Saroyan. Yokohoma, California is both heart-felt and humorous. It is one of the best books on the Asian American experience.

I first discovered Mori's writing in an anthology, but when I heard he published collections of short stories, I had to find them. This collection is marvelous. If creative writing doesn't work out for me, I want to pursue academic study on Mori and the universality in his writing. His story go beyond Asian American literature. A must-read author for anyone interested in Asian American literature.

Definitely not a reissue...

I bought this book with some trepidation. I feared that this was merely a reissue of the first "Super Drawings in 3D" from 2007 which also featured the North Carolina. Nothing wrong with reissues but Kagero does have a history of "double dipping"...trying to get buyers to buy the same product twice by not making a reissue clear. I'm happy to report that that is not the case in this instance. The contents are completely different.

The book is a stapled card cover of 80 internal pages (compared to 48 for the previous North Carolina book). The book is in 8-1/4" x 11-3/4" European A4 size. There is an unbound foldout so, as always, make sure this is included if buying second hand.

The book has a mere 5 pages devoted to text; there were many more in the previous book. The rest is devoted to the CAD images of the ship as she appeared in Measure 32 camouflage in September 1944. The centerspread has an an interesting comparison of all three classes of modern US battleships.

The unbound foldout has conventional five view line drawings in 1/350th with details at various scales on the reverse. All in all, this foldout is a major improvement over the one in the first book.

In summary, this is a step up from the first book and indeed they complement each other nicely. I can highly recommend this book whether one has the previous book or not.

Coffee-table Battleship

The illustrations are superb. I have been aboard the Battleship North Carolina berthed permanently in Wilmington, North Carolina, many times and the illustrations faithfully reproduce the ship as she appears today. I consider her to be one of the most beautiful ships ever built. While the Iowa class battleships are much larger, the North Carolina has a more pleasing profile and appears more nimble. The placement of her stacks and the layout of her secondary and anti-aircraft weapons are superb. The views of the ship by Mr. Draminski are flawless.

Available again, and highly recommended too!

As always with this series - very good. Excellent drawings, plenty of detail valuable for the modeller, and of interest to anyone who wants to imagine walking the decks of a modern battleship. And, of course, good of Kagero to reissue this hitherto unavailable volume.
