A brilliant book
By not a natural
Until I read Mead's Mind, Self, and Society I couldn't get past mind/body dualism. Great authors rejected it; none, to my limited knowledge, endorsed it. But none were able to convincingly explain it away.

Mead, however, though it was not his stated intention, dispels mind/body dualism quite easily. He does so by first giving priority to the organism, something that his contemporary followers, known as symbolic interactionists, seem not to understand.

Mead then acknowledges that human beings have a central nervous system possessed of the neurological equipment needed for symbolic functioning, something not shared by other organisms, except in rare instances and in rudimentary form.

Beyond that, human beings are actively sensate organisms who participate in social settings where mutually interpretable symbols -- especially in the form of language -- are in routine use. It is in such social settings that we acquire the symbolic wherewithal needed for communication with others and for thinking, an internal conversation that we have with ourselves. It is in such social settings that we acquire an individuated self.

When speaking of acquiring language or any other capability, Mead is clearly referring to reorganization of the central nervous system. For Mead, inevitably, that is what learning is, and again we see that he has good reason to give priority to the organism.

Mead's take on the concept attitude is especially interesting. He defines an attitude as a repertoire of start-to-finish behaviors which gives value to the environment. A car is a valuable means of transportation if we know how to drive it. Otherwise it's worthless. We need a socially learned repertoire of behaviors to give it value.

Mead does not use the term sub-conscious, certainly not in the way that Freud did. Nevertheless, as socially learned behavioral repertoires become automatically responsive to specific stimuli, a richly endowed sub-conscious is created, made manifest through reorganization of the central system. This is the subconscious according to a social behaviorist

The first fifty or so pages of Mind, Self, and Society make for difficult reading. After that, however, the material becomes easier, in part because Mead illustrates the same concept again and again in different ways. Each time, it seems, the reader acquires a more subtly nuanced understanding of Mead's ideas.

Mead's work is replete with brilliant insights. It deserves reading and re-reading.

I Can't Believe This is a Real Book!

"What do you suppose has happened!"

"I don't know. What has happened?"

"Horace has eaten grandmother."

My grandfather used to tell me this story. Didn't read it. Just told it to me and to my brother. We always thought that it was a joke (because of the punchline)that he had heard somewhere. We even have him on tape telling the story. The little research I've turned up on it, however, suggests that it's an anti-slavery tract. Not sure why. The family takes Horace the Bear in as a pet and can't bear to part with him, even as he starts eating each family member in turn.

The refrain is "Horace has eaten Grandma" "Then I shall have to kill Horace," said Father. But Mother and Paul and Little Lulu cried and carried on so that Father didn't have the heart to do it. And the next day Father went hunting." And the scene is repeated again and again until there is only father and Horace who says "I have eaten little Lulu".

And the next day...HORACE goes hunting.

Now, if this is an antislavery tract, was author Coats saying we were right to be fearful? That "savages" (and I use the term advisedly: I do not mean that Africans are savages) will kill their owners? In other words, don't enslave that which is wild because it will kill you? In which case, that suggests this is also a RACIST tract...kinda sorta...in any case, my Grampy would spin in his grave if he knew he was telling us an allegorical screed.

Ah well. I think I will prefer to think fondly of the story as it was told to me on my grandfather's knee and imagine it as a funny, macabre joke.

A wonderful story!

I grew up with this book as did the generation before me. It is so much fun to read aloud with the kids, a pity it is now out of print. If you can find it, get it!

Worst reproduction of a book that I have ever seen!

This is an absolutely terrible reproduction of the original book. If I could give it minus stars I would. It doesn't look remotely like the original, the quality of the paper and the actual binding of the book is substandard. I will be returning it.

Beginning with a historical overview, this book discusses how the concept of chemical messengers arose in the early twentieth century and shaped our current understanding of the action of hormones, cytokines, neurotransmitters, and growth factors.

Signal Transductionsecond edition further examines more complex signalling cascades, emanating from classic receptors, as well as adhesion molecules, involved in processes such as vision, smell, inflammation, innate and adaptive immunity, glucose homeostasis, cell-fate decisions, cell differentiation, and cell transformation. This timely revision concludes with a discourse on the targeting of signal-transduction cascades in the treatment of cancer and the structure of protein domains key to the assembly of signalling complexes.

About the Author
IJsbrand Kramer is a professor at the University of Bordeaux, working in the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology (IECB). He holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in BioMedicine from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, with a one year research-excursion in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Liverpool, UK. He did his Ph.D. at the University of Amsterdam, in the Central Laboratory of Blood transfusion services (Stichting Sanquin) and worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Hubrecht Laboratory in Utrecht and at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then took a lecturer position at the Department of Pharmacology at University College London, where he taught Signal Transduction (with Bastien Gomperts and Pether Tatham) and Pharmacology. Both teaching activities have been documented in textbooks: Signal Transduction (3 editions) and Receptor Pharmacology (CRC Press/Taylor Francis Group, 3 editions). Most of his research centers on the theme of inflammation, starting with neutrophils and the NADPH oxidase, synovial fibroblasts and destruction of the joint and more recently podosomes formation and extracellular matrix destruction in vascular endothelium. He moved to the University of Bordeaux for family reasons and switched from Pharmacology to Cell Biology, with a strong contribution to an introductory course for 1st year university students. Given the important teaching load and the general low level of student engagement in higher education he started to investigate the reasons for student failure (finding out about their expectations and attitudes) and the role of images and animations in comprehension. Scientific publications, web-based multimedia resources and dramatically enhanced retention rates (from 33 to 85%) are the fruits of these activities. At the same time he organized with University College London and Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, summer schools on Receptor and Signalling Mechanism. He has been co-director of two European Programmes (Interbio and Transbio) that aimed at enhancing industrial innovation in the biomedical sector in the South West European Region (SUDOE).

Signal transduction is aways difficult to understand. There are several books and reviews that present intracellular signaling pathways as lots of little coloured balls, like an M&Ms pack. However, this book presents the information clearly, with real examples applyed to diferent biological areas.

To reflect this, NFRs are represented as `softgoals', whose interdependencies, such as tradeoffs and synergy, are captured in graphs. The impact of decisions is qualitatively propagated through the graph to determine how well a chosen target system satisfices its NFRs. Throughout development, developers direct the process, using their expertise while being aided by catalogues of knowledge about NFRs, development techniques and tradeoffs, which can all be explored, reused and customized.
Non-Functional Requirements in Software Engineering demonstrates the applicability of the NFR Framework to a variety of NFRs, domains, system characteristics and application areas. This will help readers apply the Framework to NFRs and domains of particular interest to them. Detailed treatments of particular NFRs - accuracy, security and performance requirements - along with treatments of NFRs for information systems are presented as specializations of the NFR Framework. Case studies of NFRs for a variety of information systems include credit card and administrative systems. The use of the Framework for particular application areas is illustrated for software architecture as well as enterprise modelling. Feedback from domain experts in industry and government provides an initial evaluation of the Framework and some case studies. Drawing on research results from several theses and refereed papers, this book's presentation, terminology and graphical notation have been integrated and illustrated with many figures.

Nice piece of work

This book provides an excellent framework, set of tools, and methodology to make system design decisions based on analysis non-functional requirements and "softgoals," often lacking in other software engineering methodologies and tools. In chapter 14 of the book, the authors provide extensions to the tools to model to analyze strategic rationale and business goals of a system, and apply them to a hypothetical business process re-engineering example. I believe that the authors here have presented a base set of tools and methodologies that have applications far beyond the field of software engineering as demonstrated in this chapter, and I look forward very much to see where this work will lead.

All you need to know about non-functional requirements.

From qualitative analysis to quantitative anlysis it is all there. Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are like the step-child to functional requirmeents but this book finally gives NFRs their due. It is a must read for any person in the software/systems engineering community. Especially impressive is the graphic representations which compliment the text.

Joyous Indeed!

Besides being the most approachable physics primer I've come across, this text is a pleasure to read. Wiggins combines his contagious enthusiasm for the subject matter with simple do-at-home experiments and helpful historical accounts - and he does so in such an effortless and enjoyable way that the reader is inclinced to agree: there is plenty of joy in physics!

Great introduction to physics

This book was recommended to me by my physics professor to help me get ready for university physics with calculus. It really helped me grasp the concepts and prepare me for class. It was a quick and easy read with a nice informal tone mixed with some light humor. It was a perfect intro since the last science class I took was high school chemistry 20+ years ago:)

For modelers, train buffs and anyone who wants to know!

John Armstrong is both a railroader and a railroad modeler. He wrote "Railroad: What it Is, What it Does" to help modelers create realistic layouts by understanding how a real railroad operates. But it doesn't matter if you're a modeler: whatever your reason, if you want to know how railroads operate, then this book is for you!
Armstrong covers every aspect of railroading. Starting with history as far back as the Roman Empire, he surveys the evolution of rail transport from mining cars on wooden tracks through the "big steel rail". He covers the pros and cons of flat wheels on flanged track versus flanged wheels on flat track, stone ties versus timber ties, steel rails versus iron rails, and all of the engineering issues that go into building a stable, long-lasting track--and that's just in the first few chapters.
From there he explains the economic issues that go into deciding where to run the track, how to route the trains, and everything that goes into establishing a railroad operation.
Finally he covers all the details: how a consist is put together; the various cars and their construction; the railroad workers and their various jobs.
This is one of the few books that leaves me feeling like I know all about the subject. It's incredible how he packs so much knowledge into these few pages! He obviously knows, and loves, his subject. And he writes with a storyteller's flair, so it's more like a novel than a text--I was sorry when it was finished!
Do yourself a favor. If you have any interest in trains whatsoever, get this book. You'll read it more than once.

Railroading 101

This is a super resource. Our corporation uses it for all of our "newbies".. so they can understand the basics. I may be partial, because our corporation submitted many of the graphics contained in the book, but it truly is a great primer.
