Theme connects to boys, which is hard to find

My son is in the first grade and has great reading skills. He is at that in between level where chapter books are too hard yet for him to read independently, but the leveled readers are boring him. The Branches books created by scholastic are perfect for him (Kung Pow Chicken being just one series of many). These books maintain his interest and motivate him to want to read. I believe this is a great step into getting him into smaller chapter books; it is a perfect stepping stone. Also, it is hard to find books that interest boys. I also recommend the Boris and Monkey Me series, if you have young readers.

Good, clean, humor - second book just as good as the first

This second book in the series is just as good as the first. It's more good, clean, humor that is very accessible to the beginning reader.

The book pays homage to Spiderman with a reporter who prints unflattering things about our second-grade superhero and his sidekick Egg Drop. When the town is talking trash about our hero, his younger brother reminds him, "A true hero helps out-- no matter what other chickens say about him."

If you're still reading aloud, the book is enjoyable for adults too because the puns are great and made me laugh out loud.

Most certainly got my money's worth and then some!

This is the first book series that my son immediately sat down with and started to read on his own. After reading one of these books at school, he begged me to get more. The fact that the groupings of words are spread out around the pictures helps it be more entertaining. My son noted that the main chicken is in 2nd grade just like he is, which helped him feel like he is reading on grade level (which he pretty much is, but it is hard to see other kids who are more advanced reading). I will be buying the 4th book and looking for other branch books.

The book is superb. It is intended for advanced undergraduates, although graduate students and professionals can also benefit a great deal from reading it. The focus on fiscal policy and on optimal policies is most welcome. I agree with the preceding commenter about Chugh's book being a bit wordy, but that is the price paid so as to reach the undergraduate audience.

Students Can Get Their Teeth into This Text

I use the Center, Jackson, Smith and Stansberry textbook in our Case Studies in Public Relations course.

The cases include famous and not so famous cases from recent decades, which introduce students to the array of potential communication and leadership problems they may encounter in the field.

This case study approach gives students an interesting and pragmatic approach for applying public relations and leadership principles. The book's readable style provides sufficient detail for understanding the cases so that students can really discuss what happened and what might have been done.

A pedagogically sound and well-constructed instructor's manual gives the professor a thorough background for using the case study approach to teaching.

The seventh edition is an excellent choice.

Two probable prerequisites to this book would be a book on the basic principles and practices of PR and a book on PR campaign strategies. Public Relations Practices is the door through which the reader is invited to enter "the real world" of PR. This book should be required for everyone even thinking about entering the field of public relations. The case studies give a very real view of how public relations are in the real world. Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR Wired is also another book that gives a real-life accurate view of PR. I would recommend in particular his Magoo Theory of public realtions.

About the Author
Russell Kane was born in Enfield, Essex, in 1980. His life-long love of literature meant that he read his way out of Ecstasy pills, cannabis and a job as a shop assistant, into a first-class degree and a job at an ad agency. He made Head of Copy in eighteen months. Then a colleague suggested stand-up comedy as a way of letting off steam and creative juice in the evening. Within two years, Kane had left the world of advertising to become a professional comedian and won last year's Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show, the most prestigious prize in UK comedy. The Humorist is his first novel.

disappointing

I think I got this book by mistake, thinking it to be an autobiography of this comedian, whose work I enjoy very much. (There are probably autobiographical elements in the story such as his hair dyes, his prancing around and his racist father.)

It turns out to be a very odd story that doesn't engage very much. If musicologists spoil music by splitting it into bits and analysing them, then this is what the hero of this book does with jokes. I suppose comedians do analyse jokes to see how they effect audiences - and the joke in this book is literally deadly.

The author is intelligent but I think he is trying to be too clever by his use of words, some of which one feels he has just looked up, like a school boy, in a dictionary and feels that he must drop them into a sentence so as to show off his erudition as soon as possible. Death by laughter

Benjamin White was born without the ability to laugh but with a gift of understanding humor and laughter. He was also secretly in love with his married cousin Becky. Working as a comedy critic, White had an ambition - to laugh. He worked quietly to distill the essence of laughter and create the perfect joke in the hope that performing it would make everyone including himself laugh. In the course of that process he takes us to meet Professor Leavey, an old exponent of the art of laughter who had written a book on laughter called "The Greek Philosopher's Joke", but Leavey does not think that comedy is an art. Still, White was determined to find that formula, and as he tracked Leavey he began to have strange dreams in which he would see how his perfectly crafted and perfectly delivered joke fall flat to an unimpressed audience. We follow his quest and gradually see the twisted mind behind the hidden genius and soon find ourselves in the midst of a horrifying finale, the essence of dark humour.
